In a world where AI is becoming an increasingly influential tool online, there are many fundamental questions around copyright, automation and fake traffic that are coming to the forefront.
In an attempt to provide a level of choice for website owners Cloudflare has implemented firewalls to protect client websites from AI. And this is important if you use Cloudflare on your website.
At first glance, it sounds simple, block bots and protect your content. But it’s not that straightforward. AI bots don’t just read your pages, they use your content to generate answers in AI search engines. Those engines are starting to replace traditional search. Block the bots and your content might never show up in AI-generated answers. Allow them and you could get more exposure, but at the cost of extra bandwidth, server load, content used without a visit to your site and inaccurate website analytics.
Why it matters
AI search is growing fast. People are asking questions and getting answers straight from AI in both search engines and AI platforms. That means your content could be shown without any reference to your business and a human visiting your site.
Some clients will want that visibility. Others may prefer to restrict access to their content. Either way, it’s a strategic choice, not just a technical setting.
Another thing to keep in mind is that every bot visiting your site adds load. They aren’t paying visitors, they don’t click links, and they don’t generate leads, however their interactions do impact your analytics, inflating both visits and clicks. Too many bots can also slow your site down, potentially push up hosting costs and even cause errors. Cutting down on bot traffic can make your website faster and more reliable for the people who actually matter.
Cloudflare makes it easy
Until recently, blocking bots was fiddly. You had to use robots.txt, know each bot’s user-agent and write precise rules. Cloudflare simplifies it with two features:
1. Block AI bots
A simple toggle lets you block AI training crawlers from visiting your site. You can block them completely, block only certain pages, or allow them on certain subdomains.
2. AI labyrinth
This clever tool adds invisible ‘maze’ links to your pages. Bots that ignore crawl instructions get stuck in the labyrinth, while compliant crawlers skip it entirely. It does not affect SEO or user experience, but it protects your content and reduces unnecessary bot traffic.
Once configured, you can track bot activity via Security Analytics. You will see who is visiting, who is blocked and any violations. It is surprisingly insightful and a little nerdy, in the best way.
Making the choice
There isn’t a single right answer. You need to decide whether you want your content to feed AI systems or stay private. It’s worth weighing the trade-offs carefully:
- Allowing bots: more visibility, potential traffic, AI citations
- Blocking bots: better performance, protected content, less server load
If you’re unsure which route to take, consider how AI visibility fits into your wider digital strategy. The right balance will depend on your goals, your audience and how much control you want over your content.
Our take
Generative AI is changing the way people find and use content. Cloudflare gives you the tools to decide who can see your content and how it is used. The important thing is to make a considered choice, keep an eye on your traffic and adjust as your strategy develops.
And yes, we love tools that give flexibility, protect our clients and keep websites humming along. Cloudflare’s AI bot controls are a small step that can have a big impact.
