Why tone of voice matters more than ever in B2B marketing

Your logo might get you noticed, but it’s your tone of voice that makes people actually want to engage with you.

Tone of voice is the personality behind your words. It’s how you sound, not just what you say. It’s the difference between ‘We provide innovative solutions’ and ‘We solve the problems that keep you up at night.’ Same message, completely different feel.

And yet, it’s often the most overlooked element of brand identity.

What is tone of voice, really?

Think of tone of voice as your brand’s verbal fingerprint. It’s the consistent way you express yourself across every touchpoint, from your website to your LinkedIn posts, from your proposals to your direct outreach. It sits alongside your visual identity as a core pillar of branding.

A distinctive tone of voice does three things brilliantly:

  • It makes you memorable in crowded markets
  • It builds emotional connection with your audience
  • It signals who you are and what you stand for

Without it, you’re just another voice in the noise.

The homogenisation of tone of voice in B2B marketing

If you’ve scrolled through LinkedIn anytime recently, you may well have noticed something a little… uncanny.

Every third post sounds like it was written by the same person. Because, well, it probably was – or rather, the same AI model.

ChatGPT and its siblings might be brilliant for productivity in content creation, but less so for brand distinctiveness.

The problem isn’t AI itself. It’s that everyone’s using it the same way, with the same prompts, getting the same output. The result is a sea of content that sounds professional, polished and utterly forgettable.

When everyone sounds the same, no one stands out. And in B2B marketing, where on average 95% of your audience isn’t in market right now, being memorable is everything. If you can’t lodge yourself in someone’s brain during those ‘not in market’ months, you won’t make the shortlist when they finally are ready to buy.

The opportunity hiding in plain sight for B2B brands

When everyone zigs, it creates a massive opportunity to zag.

While your competitors are churning out AI-generated content that sounds like it came from the same corporate template, you can stand out by creating content that comes across as distinctly real, personal and human.

A memorable tone of voice doesn’t mean being loud or gimmicky. It means being authentically you.

It means having the confidence to break a few rules, inject some personality and write like you’d actually speak.

Look at the B2B brands that cut through. They’re not always the biggest or the loudest. But they are the most distinctive. They have a point of view, a personality, a little something extra that makes you feel something.

That emotional connection matters more than most B2B marketers realise. Yes, business decisions involve logic and ROI calculations. But they also involve people – people who respond to brands that feel human, approachable and different from the rest.

Tone of voice in action

We saw this play out recently with Acron Aviation. When it rebranded with an entirely new name and identity, it needed a strategy that pointed to the future whilst reassuring existing companies that none of its old expertise was being lost.

The rebrand wasn’t just about a new logo and colour palette. It was about creating a complete brand identity that would resonate with airlines, manufacturers and aviation professionals worldwide. The work we did establishing its new tone of voice played a key role in that, positioning Acron Aviation as confident, innovative and distinct from its competitors.

Tone of voice was just one part of the go-to-market campaign. But it was part of the foundation that made everything else work. The messaging, the content, the multi-channel approach – all of it benefited from a consistent voice to tie everything together and make it memorable.

The bottom line for B2B brands

AI isn’t going anywhere, and as long as it’s around businesses are going to use it to generate content. It’s a powerful tool for productivity and scale.

But as more B2B brands lean on it for content creation, the opportunity to stand out with a distinctive, human tone of voice gets bigger. It doesn’t have to be flashy. Done right, it just makes everything else better.

Your tone of voice is as fundamental to your brand as your logo. It’s time to treat it that way.
